Independent PS3 is Betamax

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

It's not beta Max. To say so would be Mad Max.

The Independent isn’t impressed by the Playstation3. In fact, they are concerned that the Playstation3 could be the next Betamax. The Betamax was a VHS alternative released by numerous companies, including Sony in the mid-70s. It never took off.

Some say that the scale of its ambition could prove to be Sony’s downfall. As analysts like to point out, the video battle of the Eighties - VHS vs Betamax - shows that picking a winner is not always straightforward. Betamax was technically superior, yet lost out to VHS and so became obsolete. So has Sony bitten off more than it can chew?

WSJ: Wii Workout Causes Concern

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Erk.

The Wall Street Journal has put its name behind an article that describes how playing a Wii can turn into a workout. The article also reveals the possible injuries that could be obtained during an agressive workout.

Blaine Stuart of Rochester, N.Y., mistakenly whacked his fiancée, Shelly Haefele, while playing tennis and also accidentally hit his dog while bowling.

What can really be said? The Wii can be played without leaving the armchair, as our favourite Nintendo of America representative Perrin Kaplan says in the article.

Ryan Mercer, a customs broker in Indianapolis, lifts weights several times a week. But that hasn’t helped much with the Wii. After playing the boxing game for an hour and a half, his arms, shoulders and torso were aching. “I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe — I had to go take a shower,” he says. And the next morning? “I had trouble putting my shirt on,” says the 21-year-old avid gamer.

Wii is a dork with potential

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Good work Charlie Brown!

…the Wii is a solid alternative for gamers who don’t want to spend $1,000 or more on eBay for a PS3. And if buying one means you look like someone giving a PowerPoint presentation in the middle of a meth binge, that’s a small price for artistic progress.

SFGate.com has run an article on the Wii, stating that the Wii has potential, but the controllers are a little ‘dorky’. The article believes that the Wii controller works for some games, [Excite Truck], but is ineffective and clumsy for others. [Monkey Ball]
