Will Mario have a sporting chance on the Wii?

October 8th, 2006 by Kit Allen

Mario has played many sports over the years, including tennis, golf, baseball, basketball, and gokarting. Each of Nintendo’s consoles to date has featured a smattering of Mario themed sports games. With the pending release of the Nintendo Wii, gamers around the world should prepare for for an onslaught of Mario games.

But what can Mario play on the Wii?

Several of Mario’s main sport franchises already have their target audience saturated with similar games. Let’s run through popular Mario sports series…

Mario Tennis

Mario Tennis hit the gaming crowd in 1995 as the in-pack game, ‘Mario’s Tennis’, [Similar to Wii Sports for the Wii] on the Virtual Boy console. There are a total of five Mario Tennis games on the Gameboy, N64, GBA and the GameCube.

versus

Wii Sports Tennis

Out of all the Wii Sports, [there are five] Wii Tennis has recieved the most enthused reviews. From the avid gamer to the meekest journalist, one word has been been ricocheted around the internet when describing gameplay experience. Fun

Wii Sports Tennis on the Nintendo Wii

It’s going to be near impossible for Mario Tennis to compete with Wii Tennis in the US, Europe and Australia markets thanks to the pack-in, and the sheer number of games being released for the Wii. With so many games available, why buy a game similar to one I already own?

Mario Golf

There have been four official Mario Golf titles, on the Gameboy, N64, GBA and Wii. There have also been golf games featuring Mario, but predating the Mario Golf franchise on the NES.

versus

Wii Sports Golf & Super Swing Golf

If Mario chooses to play golf on the Wii, he will have a tough time winning the championship. He will already be competing with two major titles. The first being the widely distributed, but not widely indepth Wii Sports golf, as well as the cutesy, funky Super Swing Golf.

These two titles cover the main target audience for Mario Golf with cute characters and vibrant environments. There is however, a gap for the more ’serious’ golf game on the Wii.

Mario Kart

The one typical Mario romp that hasn’t been overun by competitors is Mario Kart. The Mario Kart series has five console installments, on the NES and SNES, Gameboy Advance, N64 and Gamecube. A Wii version has been reported, but no screens, artwork of information has been released yet.

Mario Baseball

As well as traditional Mario sports games, there is one generation old Mario Superstar Baseball. This title was released onto the Gamecube in 2005.

If Nintendo chose to release Mario Superstar Baseball, the only current title Mario would have to compete with would be the inpack Wii Sports Baseball game. Luckily for Mario fans, the game hasn’t caused as much of a stir as Wii tennis or golf, thus creating an opportunity for Nintendo to throw a plumber into the works.

Mario Strikers

Finally, a shining beacon of originality for Mario. Like Superstar Baseball, Mario Strikers, a soccer based game, was released exclusively for the Gamecube. It’s sequal, Mario Strikers Charged is releasing on the Wii.

that sucks i no wii sports has tennis and golf, but i wanted a wii for those two games

especially mario tennis. that game was sooo adictive on 64 - its a darn shame if it doesnt get released

I really don’t agree with this site about the comment on tennis. Sure Wii sports is fun, but it was just used to show the functions of the controller. It also, as far as I know, didn’t make as huge a splash to cancel out other games as this site says. Plus you can’t move your character in tennis making it just if you swing the remote in time you hit the ball which has litte depth.

Personally tennis games are a good game to target on the Wii with the remotes functions.

Also Mario Tennis was an awesome game that did well on both systems. I think it has a very good chance of releasing. Mario also has a huge fanbase going for him and is the mascot pretty much for Nintendo. His games are not likly to be overshadowed by a large base of games coming out.

You guys need to get lives…I doubt you’ve ever been laid. I agree, Wii sports games aren’t full games. The baseball game is basically a home run derby and thats it. You don’t control any movement, only swinging the bat and pitching. The only decent game is the bowling. I would be seriously surprised if Mario Golf and Mario Tennis aren’t released within the next year.

  10. Mathew Mannion Says:

Jon, i would like to fuck your tiny tight asshole, nice round ass.

  11. Jacques Says:

Uhh.. anyway. Good article. Mario Golf and Tennis are going to be fucking great.

  12. Aqua Dragon Says:

There are also the N64 games atat were released in the middle of the SNES and the Gamecube such as Mario Golf 64, Mario Kart 64, Mario Tennis 64 and Mario Football 64

I have to say, that I could not agree with you in 100% regarding rio have a sporting chance on the Wii? | Nintendo Blog, but it’s just my opinion, which could be wrong :)

    WOW DUDE

this is serously the worst shit i ever read….

First: You say that mario stricker/kart/baseball are the games that we most want… WTF these are the games that are using just a little bit (exept maybe kart) of the wii system, golf and tennis are amazing sports to play with the wii control

Second:You say that Wii sports is enaugh… WOW U IDIOT? Wii sports was just a little game that nintendo made in 5 minutes to help and show the controls of the Wii. Wii sports tennis is enaugh? there is one place we can play, always 2v2, the only characters are shitty little things without arms, and the register of the movement isnt perfect at all. In Wii sports golf, there are a big total of 9 holes, 1 driver, 1 iron, 1 wedge, 1 putter, and again the same shitty Mii characters, AND again the bad registration (especially when we do small putts. AND YOU SAY WE DONT NEED ANY MARIO SPORTS BECAUSE OF WII SPORTS

Mario Tennis, Golf, Kart are ‘must’ for the Wii so please dont write: These two titles cover the main target audience for Mario Golf with cute characters and vibrant environments./It’s going to be near impossible for Mario Tennis to compete with Wii Tennis in the US, Europe and Australia markets thanks to the pack-in, and the sheer number of games being released for the Wii. With so many games available, why buy a game similar to one I already own?

Its not even close of beeing the same thing

And if you really love ur damn lovely Mii characters, if they do a mario golf and tennis they’ll probably do like in Mario Party 8 and put games where u can play with ur Mii.

When I wrote Mario Golf Wii I was looking for good articles and maybe news of upcoming games, I didnt know that the first page would have been this….

    Seriously… wow….

    Here is my opinion,
    Im a German Nintendo Player.
Ive played many Sportsgames in my life
and i always enjoyed Marios Sportsgames.

I give Nintendo credit that they made Wii Sports
to show the people what is possible.
But they are not complete Games.
No Tournament mode, No League, not even a Highscore Table.
And that is the reason why Nintendo should consider
to produce Mario Sport Games for the wii,
    like Strikers Charged.

There is a good chance that the American and Japanese Players
will see a Mario Baseball for Wii. Just because its a popular Sports there.
There are a lot of People playing Baseball too in Germany.
But its unlikely to get it in Germany.
Hey you cant even get “the Bigs” here :-(
And worst of all i cant even buy the american Version (PAL).

The only Sports i believe you will never see from MArio
is American Football. But thats OK ive got Madden 2007 ;-)

    Peace Piet

I too have some doubts about the future of the Mario Golf and Tennis games, both of which I loved for N64 and GB, but never bought for GC. I don’t think it’s fair to say that we’re not likely to see them, it’s just too early to tell.

No matter how saturated the market is with similar games, none of them have Mario and Co. I have never bought a golf or tennis game that didn’t offer the possibility to play as Yoshi, ya know? Nintendo probably knows there alway a market for Mario.

Also, Wii Sports is too simplistic and somewhat of a rushed simulation in my opinion. No tournaments, single courses, no power-ups and weapons (which is part of the appeal of Mario games). Baseball I’m sure we’ll see because the Japanese are rabid for it and Americans will buy it.
